Three (W) Things Thursday

I don't usually do Three Things Thursdays or Wordless Wednesdays, but it sort of works today. It's another excuse to do a post in bullet points, at least!

1. Weight: I've been worried about it, in the manner of someone who has a big race in just over two weeks and can't seem to stop eating. My sweet tooth has become a fang. So has my savory tooth (chicken and dumplings.....mmmmmmmm........) I'm still controlling the sweet tooth except on Sundays, though I did have some pumpkin pie at my daughter's class Thanksgiving lunch today. I love pumpkin pie. Not exercising such control over the savory tooth......except to hold off on dairy before speed workouts and long runs......

I'm less worried today because the number on the scale registered 125.4. I haven't seen a 5 for that third number since before my kids were born. So it seems....it's actually OK that I'm hungry lately.

Bring on the pumpkin pie (mostly on Sundays, of course, and I know this free pass will be over after the California International Marathon...but still.....bring it on).

What's your favorite holiday dessert?

2. Watch: I got a new strap for the Garmin and since then it's worked just fine. I'm being much more faithful about rinsing it out after EVERY run, and hand-washing it with soap after every five runs.

I'm still worried about its accuracy (maybe taper worries are setting in before I even taper). So yesterday I experimented with wearing the strap above my instead of below my "girls" (guys have an advantage here; bras and breasts....tricky for heart-rate monitors). It worked OK, but I think during a longer run it would chafe, so today I went back to the usual position.

If you heart-rate train, how do you position your strap? (Interested in hearing from gals AND guys on this one.....)

3. Weak Points: Thanks to two massages I can't really afford from the excellent Kate, one visit to Dr. Hansen the chiropractor, plus Colleen's perfect exercises, my right hamstring has subsided and is feeling completely normal. My back, like a child that's been ignored too long, has been bugging me a bit the last few days. But some good Pilates stretches and time on the foam roller placate it, and it hasn't interfered with any runs. It's also still at its worst in the morning right after I roll out of bed. Running loosens it up.

One of the massages revealed that my right calf is also VERY tight. I'm now paying it more attention with the Stick and roller as well. Boy, do I hate having my calves massaged! It makes me want to kick like an unbroken colt.

What sore spots do you hate to have worked on?

  1. I wear the HR strap below my sports bra and it definitely screws with accuracy. That being said, I'm far too well endowed to wear it anywhere else. I have had some serious wounds when I tried to move it.

  2. hr strap goes tucked right in under the saggy boobs of mine.

That's great about your weight!!! I'm doing Boulder First Bite 2 times this week...with Arugula last night and Oak tonight...definitely going to try to run long this weekend to keep away those effects!

Also, great news about the hamstring too!!!

  3. I really like the idea of referring to my sweet tooth as a fang :)

  4. I wear the strap below the girls, but the other day the sensor part slipped down (due - I'm sure - from all that weight loss - hahahah) and it chaffed the hell out of my upper stomach. Major ouch. I hate the HRM strap!!! Will you be wearing it for the marathon?

I think a few bites of pumpkin pie isn't going to hurt you at all on race day!! :). Nice job on the 125s - woohoo!

  5. Awesome about the weight, and I loved the sweet tooth fang. :) My favorite dessert...apple pie? Maybe? Depends on the day...that's kinda like asking which of my kids I like better...I love them all. Well, not pumpkin pie. I know, un-American!

When I wear my HRM, it's always right under my sports bra.

  6. Sounds to me like you're doing just fine on the weight end. Great job! I swear, I used to have a scar under my girls from my HRM from all the chafing. It really is tough to avoid.

  7. Yeah, I wear the strap just below the guys! Your weight? Woman, I haven't run since the Freep and I'm eating like crazy...........

  8. Three things back atcha -- 1. Eat what you want! 125 is tiny! 2. BELOW the girls, definitely below. 3. The fact that you said "kick like an unbroken colt" is awesome. Love it! Hopefully you will be kicking like an unbroken colt during the CIM! That would be entertaining!

  9. Massages can work miracles- glad to hear it helped your hamstring so much! As for weight, I am starving when marathon training and my weight usually goes up a few pounds... I'm impressed yours went down!

  10. I wear the strap inside my sports bra below. I have not had any probs with it slipping or chafing...but I don't really run that far. I do use it regularly on the machines for upwards of 2 hours...still no probs. And I wear a cut off sock-top on my wrist under the garmin. It soaks up sweat and makes it more comfy on my tiny, bony wrist. I actually LOVE having my most painful sore spots worked on. I'm a total pain glutton.

  11. Love getting a massage for getting the aches out but I pretty much cringe every time they go after my calves and knees. Makes me squirm!

  12. My calves are always tight too!
I wear my strap inside the bra below my girls as well.
I impressed with your scale results! I'm having the eating-everything-in-sight problem myself right now...

  13. Weighing in on the HRM -- I wear mine below "my girls" -- I have relied on the sports bra band to help keep it in place, however since buying Garmin's smaller HR strap (instead of trying to use the original that came with my 405) it can actually tighten to a snugger fit. I've been curious to know where other people where theirs too.
