Embracing the Treadmill

I thought of calling this post "wimping out," but even though that's what I felt like I did, it's unfair to some real badasses out there who I know have to train on treadmills.

So yep....the group run didn't happen today. It was 5 degrees with a windchill of -13 when I woke up, and the sidewalks were icy. I decided breathing that for 90 minutes, and slipping around while I was at it, wasn't worth the tough-girl points. Instead, I drove to the YMCA and did my slow long one on the treadmill. It wasn't so bad. It wasn't so great either, and I still want to avoid that whenever possible....but it was better than being bone-cold for an hour and a half or more.

Plus, when I was done, the gym was right there for the 60 minutes of weights and core work that I also had on the schedule.

My friend Keith says we can try again in two weeks for the group workout. Not sure if Keith and his wife joined the group today, or waited until later....I hope they ran inside too. It's now 10:40 a.m. and it's still only 16 outside. Here's hoping it warms up for my next run on Monday!

Stay warm, everybody.

  1. I'm about to do the same today! I really need to run Tals but it's so flipping cold, I think she may have to settle for a bundled up walk :)

  2. I saw a couple of people out running on my drive home from Dave's this morning. My hands (esp nowadays) a very susceptible to cold - so that's my excuse to run on the treadmill. The weather next week is looking warmer - I am finding that 20 degrees is usually my limit for running outside.:)

  3. TM it is!!! I ran all my longs outside last winter and I just can't tolerate cold like I used too ... some combo of hypothyroid and running in the cold too much I suppose. It takes me all day and several showers to get my hands fully functional again. But there were lots of pics of my friends post run this morning covered in frost and with frozen eyelashes. Love them for it but I'm not covetous!

  7. I'm pretty sure that is being smart, not wimping out!!

  8. Ha! We "chickened" out of heading outside in the cold - set up the bikes on the trainers in the nice warm, cozy house for a nice aerobic spin followed up by some free weight training. It is nice to change it up some!
Tomorrow, I might be brave and go OUTSIDE for a short run and then follow it up with some intervals on the trainer INDOORS. Again, it is nice to be forced to add some variety. :-)

  9. Wow! I'm impressed that you even considered an outdoor run!!! Pretty much the winter (or any extreme weather) finds me on my treadmill!!!
Good luck on qualifying to Boston - who cares what age you are when it happens????

  10. I don't blame you. In Vegas, the summer is treadmill time. 110 degrees and running don't mix. I happened to do the treadmill this week because it dipped below 50 and was windy. Btw, sorry about your Broncos (although I'm inwardly thrilled that John Elway is suffering right now after all the pain he caused me and my fellow Browns' fans many years ago).

  11. As much as I hate the treadmill, I have to admit, avoiding injury by slipping or something else is better. I have to go to IL next week for work and my small window of time to run in the morning before work MAY require time on the TM. I won't like, I am freaking out more than a little bit!
